1535 – Completion of the St. Demetrius Church of Suceava (construction started in August 10, 1534), foundation of Moldovan ruler Petru Rares (1527-1538; 1541-1546)
1698 – Publication, in Iasi, of „Divanul sau Galceava inteleptului cu lumea sau Giudetul sufletului cu trupul” [The Divan or The Wise Man’s Parley with the World or The Judgment of the Soul with the Body] by Dimitrie Cantemir (October 26, 1673 – August 21, 1723; ruler of Moldova 1710-1711), the first Romanian philosophical writing
1848 – Birth of Gheorghe Bengescu, diplomat and publicist, member of the Romanian Academy (d. August 23, 1921)
1877 – Romanian War of Independence: Third Battle of Plevna, one of the largest battles in the war, sees the participation of units and subunits of the 3rd Infantry Division (attacking small fort Grivita 1) and the 4th Infantry Division (attacking small fort Grivita 2). After a fierce battle, Romanian huntsmen and dorobanti [regulars] conquer, on their fourth assault, the Grivita 1 small fort. The Romanian Army loses 53 officers and 1983 soldiers, dead or wounded
1891 – Death of Emanoil Bacaloglu, physicist, chemist and mathematician, member and Vice President of the Romanian Academy (b. April 29, 1830)
1910 – Birth of literary historian Augustin Z. N. Pop (d. April 1, 1988)
1913 – Birth of neurologist Vlad Voiculescu, member of the Romanian Academy (d. 22 February 2001)
1914 – First representation of the Marioara Voiculescu-Bulandra theatre company (Oscar Wilde’s „An Ideal Husband”). The company was later renamed Bulandra-Manolescu-Maximilian-Storin and operated until 1941, with only 2 years of interruption during World War I; it was one of Bucharest’s most important theatres
1927 – Birth of chemist Victor Emanuel Sahini, member of the Romanian Academy (d. July 14, 2017)
1929 – Death of physician, pharmacologist Emanoil Riegler, a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy (b. 5 November 1854)
1940 – Second Vienna Award (Vienna Diktat). The northeastern part of Transylvania is taken from Romania and „awarded” to Hungary
1944 – World War II: Romania breaks diplomatic ties with Horthyst Hungary
1950 – Death of Alexandru Lapedatu, historian and politician, president of the Romanian Academy (b. September 14, 1876)
1964 – Death of historian Scarlat Lambrino, a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, established after 1947 in Lisbon, Portugal (b. 16 August 1891)
